Artistic Journey

A Journey of Love and Creative Expression in Art

Hello, I’m Julia – a professional artist with over 30 years of experience in illustration and animal portraiture. After graduating from the North Essex School of Art in Colchester, I began my career working in several design studios before moving into freelance illustration in 1990.

Much of my early work focused on greetings cards, magazines, and giftware, always with a strong emphasis on animals and wildlife, which have been lifelong passions. Over time, my love for painting animals naturally led me to focus on pet portraiture, starting with gifts for friends and family, and gradually expanding into commissioned work for clients across the UK and abroad.

I specialise in highly detailed, realistic portraits using watercolour on tinted board, a medium I’ve developed a deep connection with. By layering subtle tones and fine brushwork, I aim to capture not just the appearance, but the personality and presence of each animal – whether it’s a beloved dog, a loyal horse, or a cherished cat.

My work has featured in regional exhibitions and on local radio, and my commissioned portraits now hang in homes around the world. You can also find me at countryside and game fairs throughout the South East, where I enjoy meeting new clients and talking about their wonderful pets.

If you’re interested in commissioning a portrait or have any questions, I’d love to hear from you.

A portrait should do more than resemble — it should remind. Of joy, loyalty, mischief, and love.

The Philosophy Behind My Artistic Approach to Pet Portraits

I believe a great pet portrait does more than capture a likeness — it tells a story. Every animal has its own character, quirks, and quiet expressions of love, and my goal is to honour that with care and precision.

For me, painting animals is not just a skill, it’s a joy. Each portrait is a tribute to the unique bond between a person and their pet, and I feel privileged to help preserve those memories in art that lasts a lifetime.
